ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance of evidence for inclusive development. It argues that social policy that propels social re-engineering in South Africa needs to be underpinned by evidence, which can be in the form of data, indicators, and information about social and economic issues. The former can only be feasible if the state’s research abilities are sharpened and that government bureaucrats are well trained to oversee such processes. If social re-engineering is to be well mapped-out, the state must have a robust information system in place to generate necessary evidence needed to create the Good Society.
