ABSTRACT

The Theory-Driven Mixed Methods (TDMM) approach to survey development includes two features: (1) using theory to guide development of scales and interpretation of findings and (2) mixing quantitative and qualitative methods in scale construction and validation. In this chapter, research is defined along with the differentiation between antecedent, mediating, consequent, and moderating variables and how they are used to define experimental and non-experimental research. The chapter then explains what survey, scale, and index are and what survey research is. Various survey research designs are defined. This chapter concludes with a section about ethics concerns unique to survey research.
