ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss dating in India. Despite Bollywood’s fascination with love at first sight and star-crossed romance, dating was unusual in India until recently, and arranged marriage was the norm. Perhaps the novelty of dating helps explain why Hindi lacks common words for romantic partners. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about teasing siblings, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a girl is teased by her brother about her boyfriend when she loses her phone. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to love and dating, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to a scavenger hunt.
