ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss friendship and vegetables. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about what qualities the reader looks for in a friend and their favorite vegetable, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story which explains why the potato is the king of vegetables and is prepared with so many other vegetables in Indian cooking, whereas okra is prepared alone. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to Indian cooking, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to use adjectives to describe fruits and vegetables through matching and guessing games.
