ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss choosing and negotiating the price of a hotel room. When booking a hotel in India, customers will often ask to see multiple rooms before choosing one. It’s normal to bargain over the room rate, and a hotel will often give a discount if business is slow. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about the reader’s preferences for a hotel, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a woman asks to see different hotel rooms and negotiates the rate. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to booking a hotel, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to interpreting a hotel tariff sheet and a role-play between a hotel clerk and a customer.
