ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss common illnesses and their symptoms. Indians tend to rely on home remedies for such illnesses. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about how the reader treats his/her own illnesses, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a boy pretends to be sick in order to avoid a class presentation. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to health and home remedies in India, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to diagnose the symptoms of different illnesses and perform a role-play between a doctor and a patient.
