ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss how produce makes its way to the marketplace. In India, the mango is hailed as the king of fruits. Mangoes come in many shapes and sizes, each with its own name, and connoisseurs enjoy debating the merits of each variety. Some are picked while still green and used to make spicy pickles. Mangoes usually arrive on the markets at the peak of the summer’s heat and humidity. Each year Indians send fresh mangoes around the world as gifts for friends and family abroad. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask the reader to think about the journey of fruit from the orchard to the market, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a mango describes its life in a series of journal entries. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to the cultural significance of mangoes in India, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to write their own journal entries and descriptions of their favorite produce.
