ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss the relationship between the second-generation immigrants and their relatives in India. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about the reader’s relationship with their grandparents and their reasons for learning Hindi, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a college student in the United States writes a letter in Hindi to his grandfather in India. He has learned enough Hindi in his college classes to write about his memories of playing with his grandfather as a child. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to Valentine’s Day in India, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to writing their own letter to a special family member or friend.
