ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss methods of transportation, interpreting a map, and giving and following directions. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about options for getting around the reader’s own city and how the reader gives directions, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story about a taxi-driver who talks about the difficulties of making a living and then interacts with a customer. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to the lives of taxi-drivers in India, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to read a map and understand directions to and from various locations.
