ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss ID cards and personal information needed for official forms and documents. Hindi boasts a rich vocabulary, thanks to the many cultures and languages that have called India home over the centuries. Hindi speakers make use of words from Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, and English, along with other modern South Asian languages. As in any language, Hindi speakers use different vocabulary in formal and informal situations. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about personal information, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a sample ID card. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to Hindi vocabulary and styles of speaking, such as Hinglish, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to create ID cards for other people and themselves.
