ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand a number of social problems and types of advice that Indians might receive. For example, “Eve-teasing” is a euphemism for sexual harassment and assault against women in public, including stares, lewd comments, and unwanted touching. Men who commit such acts rarely face serious consequences. The #Me Too movement has highlighted the failure of society to condemn eve-teasing. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about giving advice in the reader’s country, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and three sample questions and answers from an advice column. These deal with eve-teasing, a wife’s suspicions about her husband, and a young man’s anxiety about love and attraction. The notes on culture elucidate the social issues raised in the advice column, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in giving their own advice to similar social problems.
