ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss shopping for foods on the market and preparing to make food. The experience of shopping in India involves visiting several shops, each with its special item. This is quite different from one-stop supermarkets that are the norm in the United States. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask about how the reader would plan a special meal for a loved one and his/her experience making Indian dishes. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story that narrates the preparations of Sher Singh who takes off work early to make a surprise dinner for his wife. He interacts with different shopkeepers and vendors by necessary items for the dinner. The notes on culture elucidate the types of shops in a market, and the activities guide students in asking and calculating prices as they would do in an Indian market. The final role-play is between a customer and vegetable-seller who must negotiate prices.
