ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to interpret recipes and cook an Indian meal. Each region in India has its own distinctive style of cooking. Most learn to cook from helping in the kitchen and have no need for fixed measurements or written recipes. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask the reader his/her experiences learning to cook. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story that narrates Sher Singh’s attempts to cook a surprise dinner for his wife. He watches a video on YouTube and makes some humorous mistakes that only become apparent when his coworker samples the dish. The notes on culture describe shopping and kitchens in India, and the activities guide students in learning verbs associated with cooking in order to prepare a three-course meal. Students also create their own recipe and play a guessing game based on recipes.
