ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to talk about love and relationships. There are several words for “love” in Hindi, each with its own subtle meaning. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask the reader to reflect on their own relationships. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story which narrates how Sher Singh’s wife appreciates his attempts to cook a surprise dinner and devises a simple way to fix the dish he’s prepared. The notes on culture compare several words for “love” in Hindi, and the activities guide students in understanding the text and a role-play between the host and guest of a tea party.
