ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss serious illnesses that typically require a visit to a doctor for treatment. In Indian villages, medical services for serious illnesses are rarely available, so people have to travel to cities in order to seek treatment. In villages, many rely on home remedies and traditional healing. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask about the availability of good medical care in their own country. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story that follows a dialog between a villager who has come to the city with his daughter to seek treatment for her illness. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to medical treatment in villages and cities, and the activities guide students in describing symptoms and treatment for serious illnesses and a role-play between a doctor and a patient.
