ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss dating, matchmaking, and matrimonial advertisements in India. Matchmaking is a thriving business in India, as seen in the popularity of websites for connecting potential partners. Print and online newspapers also devote substantial space to matrimonial advertisements. These advertisements are directed in part toward parents seeking to arrange a marriage for their child. Every aspect of the match is scrutinized, including personality and interests, education and occupation, appearance and height, social status, and caste. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask about dating in the reader’s country. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story that follows a budding romance between two college students. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to matchmaking in India, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge in interpreting a matrimonial advertisement and creating their own matrimonial ad for a friend.
