ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss train travel and train schedules. In India, trains are popular for traveling long distances. When buying a train ticket, you must decide between a few types of coaches, each with different features. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about train schedules and buying tickets, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a timetable. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to types of trains and the feature they include, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to interpret a train timetable. This chapter also gives the student practice in reading the Devanagari script.
