ABSTRACT

In this chapter, students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss the process the women go through in the lead up to an arranged marriage. To find a match for their son, prospective in-laws visit a woman’s home in order to interview her. She is expected to serve the guests tea and snacks and answer questions demurely. Naturally, many women find this scrutiny to be a stressful ordeal. The chapter includes pre-reading questions that ask about how people find spouses in the reader’s country. A glossary provides relevant vocabulary for the story that describes a series of potential grooms who visit the family of a young woman. The families of the different grooms are quite disrespectful and expect the young woman to make sacrifices that she is not agreeable to. In the end, she meets a partner at work and his family visits to propose marriage. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to arranged marriage, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to create a poster on women’s rights and a role-play in which students play celebrity matchmaker.
