ABSTRACT

In this chapter students of Hindi will acquire the vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading skills necessary to understand and discuss family members and daily routines. The chapter includes pre-reading questions about how boys and girls are raised differently in the reader’s country, a glossary of relevant vocabulary, and a story in which a girl describes the daily routines of people in her family. She highlights her brother’s laziness, but notes that he is still given preference by the family because he is a boy. The notes on culture elucidate issues related to a religious ceremony mentioned in the reading, and the activities guide students in their comprehension of the story and in applying this knowledge to describe the brother’s routine from a series of pictures.
