ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the theoretical reflection on the category of ‘class’ in which the emergence and existence of middle class in American, European and Asian societies, particularly India, are traced from the 18th century. In doing so, the politics of the global middle class is mapped to examine their presence in the political sphere. Since the Indian middle class is a product of colonial rule, an attempt is made to look at the various approaches to define the middle class in India which is a complex process.
