ABSTRACT

The emergence of the new middle class which is a product of economic reforms has been discussed. It argues that post-liberalisation economic changes at the national level, transitioned to global employment opportunities and the expansion of the private sector in India, which facilitated the emergence of the new middle class (software professionals). This new middle class was different from its predecessor colonial middle class in both character and outlook and therefore the focus has been to delineate the nature and characteristics of the new middle class in the post-liberalisation period.
