ABSTRACT

On any list of life’s most stressful events, moving ranks high, but making a move in later life has some distinctive qualities. If your energy or your strength—or your ability to multitask—isn’t quite what it used to be, moving takes extra planning and effort. Your health status, your finances, your family and friend relationships are all significant factors that influence a decision to move, where to move, and what kind of living situation is in your best interest. The author guides the reader in a process of exploring the issues involved, whether the outcome is to age-in-place or make a major commitment to downsize or relocate (or both). It’s important to admit to the feelings that go with this life transition, an emotional mix of apprehension and anticipation. It’s a puzzle with many parts, this question of how and where to live as you grow older—but you can use your self-awareness and years of life experience to help solve it.
