ABSTRACT

Every story has an ending, and so it is with our own lives. This chapter’s focus is on embracing life fully as we grow older—which of course means coming to terms with the reality that our time on this planet is finite. The author helps us work around our denial by encouraging us to contemplate the lives of those who have gone on before us. We benefit by developing the habit of occasionally looking at obituaries or death notices—sometimes entertaining, sometimes profoundly moving—rather than avoiding them. And if you are intrigued by the idea of writing your own obit (you will get the facts right!), the author offers guidance and encouragement. Since you are still very much alive, you have the gift of time and the opportunity to consider what is of greatest importance to you, what life means. The author describes some paths to explore, some questions to help you define what matters most—and suggests ways to preserve and share your wisdom.
