ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the variation outside of the two traditional gender identities. It explores the reasons for the growing number of individuals coming out as transgender and the challenges they face: socially, financially, and medically. It talks about why people identified as gay or lesbian when they were really transgender and why sex-reassignment surgery isn’t an option for everyone. It discusses the difference between transexual and intersex. It also talks about the radical transitions that spouses of transitioning individuals have to go through with their own particular challenges. This chapter also lists the fifty gender options Facebook users can now choose from when signing up for an account. The stories that weave through this chapter show the issue from all perspectives.
