ABSTRACT

Sometimes it is not possible to simply cope with or even change scary thoughts. In these instances, acceptance of what one is experiencing at that moment is necessary. This chapter reviews the definition of acceptance and walks readers through various strategies for developing acceptance of their scary thoughts, including mindfulness meditation and two acceptance skills taught in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT; radical acceptance and willingness). It focuses on the power of letting go of distress in order to allow in trust in oneself and others for support.
