ABSTRACT

When professional treatment is desired, it can be overwhelming to figure out exactly who to turn to and what approach to care will be most helpful. This chapter reviews several different approaches to psychotherapy for perinatal distress, including supportive psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). The latest research on biological approaches to treating perinatal anxiety-related and depressive disorders is also presented, including antianxiety and antidepressant medications, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and ketamine. The goal of this chapter is to illustrate the range of options available to target perinatal distress and the importance of utilizing evidence-based approaches for this population.
