ABSTRACT

As with many aspects of life, when it comes to teaching science — and integrating literacy skills into the teaching of science — the only constant is change. Of course, there are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts, English language arts (ELA), and the Next Generation Science Standards, or NGSS. The NGSS writing team begins with the point that “Literacy skills are critical to building knowledge in science,” and go on to create a cross-walk of CSSS ELA and NGSS standards. Science and literacy, if they were not explicitly connected in American educational policy and curriculum before, are certainly now intertwined. The lack of writing in science classrooms, in turn, creates college students who generally lack skills in basic science writing, which they often do not get exposed to until upper-level classes during their senior year.
