ABSTRACT

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. Teachers, though, have an important part in teaching students about assessing themselves and accepting constructive feedback from others. Besides teaching the group the basics, one-on-one conferences with students will help them. Geraldine Koh is a primary teacher and she has students reflect each week through the use of pictures, recordings, and text. Students can complete the Self-Assessment of Genius Hour Traits rubric two to three times a year to see how they are growing in understanding and reaching their learning goals. Peer feedback does not come easily to all learners, and so it will be beneficial to spend time talking about what constructive feedback looks like, modeling and perhaps setting up some feedback criteria. All learners should be able to give and receive respectful peer feedback.
