ABSTRACT

Any note in the whole-tone scale can be the tonic and, because of its thoroughly consistent intervallic structure, all six rotations of the whole-tone scale sound the same. The octatonic scale consists of alternating whole-steps and half-steps. There are three unique transpositions of this scale, which is important for the purposes of composition and analysis, but for the purposes of performance it is equally important to note that there are just two unique rotations of the octatonic collection. The hexatonic scale, sometimes called the augmented scale consists of alternating half-steps and minor thirds. The octatonic scale is also known as the diminished scale, or the half-whole diminished scale. Notice that the C acoustic scale is a rotation of the ascending G natural minor scale.
