ABSTRACT

As one works through the examples in this module, it is important that to develop two habits right away. The first is the habit of paying special attention to the lowest sounding voice (the bass). The amateur music lover focuses his or her attention on the melody (the soprano), but the professional musician knows that the bass line provides a lot of important musical information. The second habit to develop is that of checking one's aural hunches against his/her knowledge about chords. This observation can confirm a hunch in either the bass or the soprano. The application of knowledge to one's aural impressions is difficult at first, but with time and practice it can become second nature. In the minor mode, the leading tone is almost always raised and the same voice leading patterns are typical.
