ABSTRACT

When the root of the chord is in the bass the chord is said to be in root position, but when the third is in the bass it is in first inversion. The first measure contains three different voicings of the tonic triad, all with E in the bass and therefore all in first inversion. I and I6 support the same scale degrees: 1̂,3̂, and 5̂, the three members of the Tonic triad. The second measure contains two voicings of V6. It may be noted that 7̂ in the bass will not be used to support 7̂ in the soprano. The third measure contains three voicings of vii°6, a triad that is built on the leading tone. Because of the diminished fifth between the root and fifth of this chord (all other diatonic triads having perfect fifths), this chord is used almost exclusively in first inversion.
