ABSTRACT

The Neapolitan triad is built on the lowered supertonic, ♭2̂, and is a chromatic variant of the ii° chord that is diatonic in the minor mode. It most typically appears in first inversion, with 4̂ in the bass, although it does occasionally appear in root position. ♭2̂ is a tendency tone and usually resolves down to 7̂, occasionally passing through 1̂ on the way. In this context 1̂ is usually harmonized with either a cadential 64 or vii°7/V. Three typical uses of ♭II are shown in Example 14.1.
