ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the collaboration between doctoral student and supervisor, characterising their relationship as being centred around collaboration. It outlines the place of self-care in this process, connecting to one’s why of undertaking doctoral studies, acknowledging the place of vision and values and how they can be different for each individual, and the role of social support and how this can be achieved through different mechanisms within and outside of the academy. Collaboration and the doctoral experience is multi-layered. In higher education relationships are key, often connected to mentoring and in ways that are between individuals across different academic levels. When approached with an awareness, openness and curiosity, what can seem a moment of tension can build a way of working and a solid relationship. Wellbeing in the workplace correlates with employee punctuality and time efficiency, less absenteeism, higher retention, increased productivity, profit in work-related outcomes over an extended period of time.
