ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the role of the presenter, or narrator, within music documentaries. The use of a presenter is the most common approach to deliver key information within a radio documentary. The chapter argues the case for and against the use of presenters in music documentaries and assess issues of credibility, distortion, and gender representation. It aims to explore the strong bond radio presenters have with the music they play and consider how the enables them to build a connection with their listeners. The selection of a suitable presenter is a decision that greatly affects the overall tone and emotional impact of a music documentary. Presentation within a radio documentary can potentially raise issues of credibility and misrepresentation. Employing a well-known presenter has become a virtual prerequisite for securing a music documentary commission. The presenter schedule of BBC Radio 6 Music has, over the years, featured a wide range of on-air presentation talent, drafted from the world of music.
