ABSTRACT

As the British moved in from the east and the Americans from the west, Tunisia became the last major battleground in North Africa. Tunisian cities and roads were bombed and destroyed by both sides. When the Germans occupied Tunisia in 1943 and were ordered to hold it at all cost, they brought in the SS and began plans for the extermination of the Jewish population. Germans sent Jews to labor camps to repair bombed-out roads, imposed exorbitant fines that bankrupted the community, and stole anything they could use. Journalists who reported on the war in North Africa were aghast at the total destruction of some Tunisian cities.
