ABSTRACT

In score preparation the string teacher should map out the entire class or rehearsal to be prepared for the predictable issues. Finger pattern problems for upper strings, as in high 2 versus low 2, forward and backward extensions for low strings, and shifting and awkward string crossings for all strings are areas that will take extra rehearsal and sectional time. In a musical setting, it is critical for the string teacher to leave enough time to run through the same section without rehearsing, in order for students to put to practice what they have learned during the rehearsal portion of class. Passages that feature obvious technical and rhythmic challenges must be taken into account when planning for class or rehearsal time. Some teachers use a drawing of a target with identified goals to inform the class of its real-time progress and inspire students to keep on task. Effective string teaching and modeling are inseparable.
