ABSTRACT

All aspects of string playing, from instrument setup to bow hold to tone production, present various challenges. Although technical challenges manifest themselves in various forms, there are commonalities found with each of those issues. Even though at first look both posture and instrument hold appear to be static, they are wholly dynamic aspects of string technique that allow players to move while performing without any restriction. Sideway motion of the wrist, or ulnar and radial deviations, is caused by the entire arm not engaging in a pendulum motion when moving from one string position to the other and for the wrist to move sideways to accommodate string changes. In the pursuit of bow technique, maintaining a reliable bow grip, moving the entire arm in a coordinated manner, smooth bow changes, smooth string crossings, and flexibility of fingers are not overnight achievements.
