ABSTRACT

In order to understand string teaching from a holistic perspective, universal pedagogical approaches must be contemplated both philosophically and in practice. Teaching the technical side of strings may be examined separately, however, the philosophical foundation and all other aspects of teaching music should be integrated within the string discipline. In 1933 Shin’ichi Suzuki realized the ability of mother-tongue speech at an early age regardless of intelligence, much like Kodaly, and that repetition of stimuli in the form of in-tune repetition of string playing with rote process would produce exceedingly positive results. The Alexander Technique has been adopted by numerous string professors throughout the world, though any Alexander teacher with proper credentials can help a string player through workshops or private sessions. In reality, a string teacher may have to start with an ensemble that comprises ten violins, zero violas, and eight cellos and zero basses.
