ABSTRACT

Students will present their observation based on the Secondary-School String Program Observation Form, immediately followed by a class discussion facilitated by the instructor. In string playing, legato indicates to play “successive notes in performance, connected without any intervening silence of articulation.” There are two factors in executing a legato bow stroke: keeping bow weight into the string during the bow change, and a split-second anticipation of the right wrist. The legato bow stroke can be played both with separate and slurred notes: legato and legato slur respectively. As notes within a single slur are naturally connected, both bow changes in between slurs and bow changes between separate legato notes are also played in a connected manner. A nuanced legato playing differs from detache in that it is more connected and requires the movement of the right wrist, hand and fingers.
