ABSTRACT

The bridge is held in place by string tension, and is the highest point on top of all string instruments, therefore, it should be guarded against all knocks, furthermore, it may not be well protected in the case, if the instrument is not tied down to the case by any internal ligature. When putting an instrument away, remove the shoulder rest or shoulder pad, wipe off any rosin from the belly of the instrument and strings by the bridge and the bow stick with a dust towel and loosen the bow hair. Once proper posture is achieved, upper string students turn their heads 45° to the left and place the violin or viola on the collarbone. The right-arm position for pizzicato is essentially the same as the regular bow-hold position. The proper right arm slope must be maintained throughout pizzicato playing for the particular string.
