ABSTRACT

Efficient and proper tuning of string instruments is a formidable challenge for any string teacher, as the task and quality control of tuning falls squarely on the shoulders of the teacher. There are numerous successful strategies for tuning and it is the string teacher’s responsibility to decide which strategy to employ to achieve a desirable accuracy. In the beginning stages students require the teacher’s help in tuning their instruments; however, they must become self-sufficient without delay. Tuning is a significant part of every string player’s education, as it is a fundamental proficiency to develop. Playing field in the string instrument making is level, where makers from Southeast Asia, to Russia, to the Americas, all have equal say in the future of violin making, in hand with technological advancements, changing playing styles, and audiences. “Factory-made” or mass produced instruments are widely available through string instrument vendors, and are critical in continuation of string programs in the US and around the world.
