ABSTRACT

A number of higher education music leaders have already shared thoughtful perspective on the general classical music landscape. To further illuminate the types of changes happening within the classical music marketplace and the types of changes that may be needed within classical music performance degree programs, the authors sought insights from a broader array of leaders in the field. Observers who are somewhat familiar with the classical music industry may have difficulty understanding why there is not frenetic and greater curricular innovation and programmatic reorientation within most music schools and conservatories. The change most often mentioned by interviewees when asked what changes were needed in schools and programs to better support student career success in the changed marketplace was to train students who could go far beyond the traditional role of performer and better advocate for and newly package and present experiences around classical music performance.
