ABSTRACT

For many years, researchers and education leaders have been describing and lamenting the range and scope of challenges swamping nonprofit higher education institutions and their leaders and administrators. The growing scope of those pressures and challenges have led many to be skeptical of the future of the higher education sector. Even while challenges are mounting related to enrollment, institutions are facing diminishing financial resources. After a high in 2006–2007, total revenues per full-time-equivalent student (specifically from federal and state levels) has continued to fall, especially for four-year degree-granting institutions. Even while facing enrollment challenges, diminishing financial resources, and pressures to reduce tuition costs and student loan burdens, nonprofit higher education institutions have faced mounting expenses related to property, physical plant and equipment, and an ever-expanding suite of student services.
