ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and examines the insights shared by higher education leaders. It introduces the insights that interviewees shared, revealing emergent themes, then moves to an analysis of responses, and provides a brief examination of how the points of advice correspond to models of change management. A fast-changing performing arts marketplace, however, is demanding we make rapid and large scale curricular changes to offered degrees. The most commonly shared advice from interviewed higher education leaders was for the leader who desired big and quick curricular change to sidestep the inherent obstacles that necessarily accompanied the curricular change process within the academy and instead provide space for innovative people, work, and/or courses. Many higher education music programs and schools already have informal partnerships or relationships with regional professional arts organizations (whether performing ensembles, music industry companies, or arts presenters).
