ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on teachers’ beliefs, teaching-engagement behaviors, and factors influencing their engagement with developing soft skills for students in Vietnamese universities. Using interview data with 41 teachers participating in the delivery of Business Administration programs in six different Vietnamese universities, and 147 disciplinary teachers from 27 Vietnamese universities, the studies showed that teachers held different beliefs about teaching soft skills, and demonstrated their engagement in different acts of teaching, both of which were affected by several contextual factors. Based on the findings, this chapter argues that leadership should be exercised to change teachers’ beliefs about the relevance of teaching soft skills, prepare them for such a new role, incentivize them, and remove obstacles so that they can engage with teaching these skills with confidence.
