ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the contemporary meaning of bisexuality, as the capacity to be attracted to more than one sex and/or more than one gender. Yet defining bisexuality as the potential to be attracted to different genders, without invoking sex, has little validity. Imagining bisexuality as universal and a-symbolic is, then, one possible anti-thesis of the idea of bisexuality as a specific identity. Bisexual subjectivity, unlike bisexual identity, cannot be maintained at all times. In many cities, much more is available for bisexuals than just the possibility of sharing with others, thanks to the efforts of the community activists who organize bisexually themed conferences, movie screenings, lectures, parties, political events, art shows and photo exhibits. Books and online forums help deepen the sense of community and extend it to those with limited physical access to events.
