ABSTRACT
This chapter recounts repeated instances of US armed intervention in the greater Middle East since the 1980s, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq and against al-Qaeda. It examines the effect they had on Arab state stability and cohesion, leading up to the revolutions of 2011. It then briefly surveys the narratives of those revolutions. This sets the scene for the ensuing inquiry regarding ‘winners’.
