ABSTRACT

Higher education does include programs of study about religion. Universities are successful as well as legally liable because they are instruments of education and not vehicles for the practice of religion, but would also govern the teaching of spirituality in occupational therapy programs. Spirituality, from an occupational therapy point of view is concerned with how a person perceives purpose and meaning in life; it is constructed through interconnectedness with others, the environment, and, for some, a higher power, which may be called God. The content is designed to help the learner become aware of his or her spiritual path and the impact it has in occupational therapy treatment process. The primary foci are the history of spirituality in occupational therapy, the theology of occupation, the therapeutic use of self, and the way in which spirituality fits into the treatment approach in occupational therapy treatment.
