ABSTRACT
This chapter draws the above threads together in order to examine the phenomenon of religious fundamentalism. It selects hybridity as the main characteristic that defines its highly complex nature that at first glance appears rather confusing to the public. More precisely two particular aspects of religious fundamentalism stand out as the crucial elements that form its complex structure. First, the hi-tech means of communication such as the digital media that are used for propaganda consumption reveal its modern aspect. Second, the extensive self-reference to religious texts and ethics along with a polemic stance towards the Otherness that condemns modern or different ways of life reveals its traditional code of meaning. Here, the hybrid nature of religious fundamentalism becomes clear: its dual allegiance to modernity and globalization as well as to tradition and intolerance.
