ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the historical connections between Iran’s pre-revolutionary opposition movements and the Palestinian cause. In the aftermath of the creation of the state of Israel and in the period after the coup d’état in 1953, a new generation of activists from various anti-monarchy movements began to emerge that were concerned about supporting like-minded movements in the region. Against the backdrop of resisting “imperialism”, many anti-monarchy organisations allied with the Palestinians. Furthermore, this chapter charts Iran’s pre-revolutionary resistance to the Shah’s proclivity to Israel between1960 and 1970, and it brings to the fore hitherto under-investigated south-south links between Iran and Palestine.
